SICO Europe: News

SICO TABLES GO GREEN

SICO Europe has recently launched another special laminate for its table seating units. The new top is designed to address the issue of climate change and ways in which we can all be more environmentally friendly and help prevent global warming.

Officially launched at this year’s Education Show in March, the laminate design incorporates the themes of deforestation, the loss of animal habitat, alternative energy sources and recycling.

Andrew McDonald, SICO’s International sales manager said, "The issue of climate change becomes more relevant every day. SICO felt it had the perfect forum to try and help highlight this issue to the younger generation in the form of its tabletops".

SICO SECURES ITS LARGEST EVER TABLE ORDER IN SCOTLAND

SICO Europe has recently delivered a record 334 dining tables to various primary schools in Scotland.

One order alone, placed by North Lanarkshire council, was for 211 tables, representing the largest single Scottish order for table seating units ever received in SICO’s 40 year history.

"This has been an extremely exciting time for SICO. In addition to the manufacturing of such a large quantity of tables, our transport department has had to co-ordinate the delivery of all the tables – for which we had just a one week time slot. This left no margin for error!" said SICO’s Education sales manager, Andrew McDonald.

Four SICO lorries and two 40ft trailers left the SICO headquarters in Kent to make the journey up to Lanarkshire where deliveries were made over a four day period to 43 primary schools.

For St Margaret’s of Scotland Primary School in South Carbrain, the new tables were replacing existing SICO tables that were nearly 30 years old.

Sharon Harden of North Lanarkshire council said, "The delivery guys have been brilliant. 'Pure dead brilliant' – as the kids up here would say!"

SICO Europe helps promote healthy eating

SICO Europe, the original British manufacturer of table seating units, is making its own contribution to the healthy school meals campaign. The company has designed a special laminate for one of its table seating units that helps children identify a varied and nutritious diet.

Instigated by celebrity TV chef, Jamie Oliver, and now backed by the UK Government, steadily schools are seeing chips and fatty foods removed from the menu. Instead, children are being offered more fruit and vegetables and food that is low in salt, sugar and fat in an effort to tackle a growing trend towards childhood obesity.

Launched at the Local Authority Caterers Association exhibition in July 2006, SICO’s table laminate promotes the five main food groups and the types of food that can be found in them. Designed to appeal to primary school-aged children, the table top looks like a country scene, with fields of crops, farm animals, a river, fruit trees and vegetable plants. The bright, colourful scene is arranged so that there is something for each child to see, regardless of where they are sat.

Rachel Sisley, Marketing Manager for SICO Europe said, “With the importance of nutrition increasing in schools, SICO felt it had the perfect forum to try and help promote the healthy eating message in the form of its tabletops”.

This special laminate option is available to customers purchasing SICO’s table seating units at a slightly increased cost compared to normal laminate options.

Quicker, Cleaner, Better Use of Space...
Abraham Darby Secondary School in the Borough of Telford and Wrekin has thrown out its antiquated dining tables and chairs and replaced them with SICO folding, wheeling tables with integral seats. Head teacher Christine Brown says that the school has found that the new tables can be set up in minutes and, after meals, can be folded up and wheeled away in no time. This gives at least another hour’s free use of the hall every day, which would otherwise have been wasted in setting up and putting away the old tables.

Seating capacity has been increased, which improves daily income by allowing more pupils to sit down and eat a meal. She has had had lots of positive comments: the catering staff find the system quick and easy to operate; the pupils like the new tables with their clean and bright look; the staff find the children behave better and the cleaners love the way the tables disappear so that they can get at the whole floor to clean it. Meal times have been transformed and are now safer, quicker and far more sociable experiences.

Telford and Wrekin have decided that SICO systems represent best value and have invested in them for all of their primary schools. Without exception the ‘feedback’ has been full of praise from all involved

SICO Europe Turn Tables Into Aid

SICO Europe have been giving a helping hand to youngsters in the developing world by swapping old dining tables in schools across Telford & Wrekin for new SICO Combined Table Seating Units.

As part of Telford & Wrekin’s Best Value programme to refurbish school dining areas, the council’s education catering service has been replacing old tables that are passed their sell by date, with new purpose made tables from leading manufacturer and furniture supplier SICO Europe.

The old tables are being taken away in the empty SICO delivery vans, at no cost to the council, to be delivered to the Medical Missionary News (MMN) a charity based in Essex who send out regular containers of equipment to Africa and South America to support a number of schools. Pupils are also sending letters, care of the SICO lorry drivers, to the children in Africa who will be using the tables.

Borough of Telford & Wrekin cabinet member for education Councillor Peggie Harrison said: "This is a wonderful scheme that is benefiting children in the developing world. Where possible, we’ve distributed the furniture to local community groups, but disposing of old furniture can be real headache. Thanks to the quick thinking of our sites and premises officer Mike Moore, old tables are now finding a useful home.

Andrew McDonald, Regional Sales Manager for SICO Europe is "delighted that Telford & Wrekin schools are enjoying the use of SICO’s tables. I am finding great satisfaction with the knowledge that SICO have saved Telford & Wrekin valuable money, whilst at the same time providing a delivery service for the old tables destined for the developing world."

Mike Moore, Sites and Premises Officer said: "The new SICO tables are easy to stack and put out, which means many schools can be using their hall space for something else - only minutes before and after lunch. The tables are also ideal for breakfast clubs, as the room can be laid and cleared quickly and efficiently before the start of the school day. The service that we received from SICO Europe was excellent, in particular the delivery drivers were courteous, efficient and incredibly helpful."

The Borough of Telford & Wrekin has been carrying out a major refurbishment programme to school kitchen and dining facilities over the last year, together with investment in a new lunchtime pre-pay system. The overall programme is part of the council’s Invest to Save plan, acting on findings from the Best Value review of the service, designed to bring in savings in the region of £4m over an eight to 10 year period.

Happy children with their new SICO tables

European Insta-Theatre

Scoil an Spioraid Naoimh (B) is a large primary school for boys located in the Western suburbs of Cork City, Ireland. In 2002 a new multi-purpose hall was constructed on the school campus to meet the school’s various Physical Education, Sport and Performing Arts requirements.

Spioraid Naoimh is a primary school with an excellent Drama and Performing Arts tradition. Having won numerous Drama awards over the years it places great emphasis on the quality and versatility of its Performing Arts facilities. John Meaney, Head Master of Spioraid Naoimh, contacted SICO and was visited by Iain Boswell to discuss further the options available. Following the meeting an immediate decision to purchase was made. When asked his opinion after installation in July 2003, John commented, "the Insta-Theatre is the perfect facility that meets all of our requirements. The hall can now be converted from a sports facility into a spectacular theatre within 20 minutes. The support, service and commitment the school received from SICO Europe was exceptional."

Following the official grand opening on 29th September 2003 by Mr. Michéal Martin, Minister for Health and Children, the Insta-Theatre has already been used during an official visit to the school by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Parent Association meetings, and more recently, the return of two former pupils who are members of the Irish International Rugby Team. When asked what activity the Insta-Theatre will be used for in the future John replied, "already we have scheduled the stage to be used for Christmas concerts. The Insta-Theatre will be used regularly from now on for drama productions, choral recitals, band performances and official occasions. We at Scoil an Spioraid Naoimh Boys look forward to enjoying this wonderful product for many years to come."

SICO Europe supplies the ‘Harbour of Peace’

Graham Dimond, Middle East Sales Manager for SICO Europe has recently secured a fantastic installation of 50 SICO tri-fold Room Service Tables with 50 food warmer boxes and 200 Oak Parquet dance floor panels, within the new Madinat Jumeirah Resort.

This majestic resort is being built in Dubai off the Jumeirah coastline. The three phase project is due for completion in September 2005 and consists of two five-star hotels, 29 Arabic villas which include 340 guest rooms, a convention centre and health spa.

The ‘Harbour of Peace’ when translated, will also boast three kilometres of waterways within an authentic Arabian oasis, which epotimises the idea of complete luxury.

Michael Woithe Project Manager for this development is positively thrilled with the convenience and quality of the room service tables, food warmer boxes and dance floors. "I am sure that the luxurious atmosphere we are striving for will be complemented by the use of these stylish tables. We needed portable dance floors to enable us to use our rooms for different purposes and SICO’s dance floors will ensure that our guests can dance the night away."
